Swimming to Benefit our Community
The Greater Portland YMCA is proud to present the 27th Annual YMCA Peaks-to-Portland Swim, the 2.4 mile swim from Peaks Island to the East End Beach. This swim provides an opportunity for swimmers to challenge their physical and mental abilities, while at the same time raising money for the Cumberland County YMCA's Annual Support Campaign, providing needed financial assistance for youth, adults and families.
The 27th Annual YMCA Peaks-to-Portland Swim will be held on Saturday, July 19th, 2008 at approximately 8:30 am, with an alternate date of Sunday, July 20th, 2008. In the case of poor weather or fog, the YMCA may impose a 1 hour delay for the start of the event.
All are welcome to cheer on our swimmers at Peaks Island and to congratulate them at the finish in Portland.
Cumberland County YMCA Appoints New Director of Human Resources
Rebecca “Becky” Humphrey has joined the Cumberland County YMCA as the Director of Human Resources, effective July 28, 2008.
She brings to the organization more than eight years of experience in all areas of Human Resources. She was previously the Director of Human Resources at Shalom House Inc.
Cumberland County YMCA CEO, Helen Foley said Humphrey was coming to the Y during a very exciting phase of growth and development to which her experience would be of great benefit.
“Although new to the YMCA as a staff member, she is very familiar with our work and mission having served on the Advisory Board for the Portland Branch of the Cumberland YMCA,” she said.
On her new appointment Ms.Humphrey said, "I am excited about joining the Cumberland County YMCA team. Through my varied connections with the Y, I have been impressed by the committed and talented staff and volunteers I have met. As the new HR Director, I look forward to doing my part to carry out the mission of this organization through supporting the leadership and staff."
Humphrey is a resident of Standish, ME and is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine’s Social Work program.
Cumberland County Y Exceeds Annual Campaign Goal But Continued Funding Needed
Although the Cumberland County YMCA’s 2008 Annual Campaign surpassed its financial goal, the community need for fee-assisted programs continues to grow and additional fund raising initiatives will be ongoing, according to the organization’s CEO Helen Foley.
At a “Victory Day” celebration held recently to mark the surpassing of the Campaign goal, Foley said the Cumberland County YMCA was very fortunate and grateful to have had “an energetic and enthusiastic” team of Campaigners which had raised over $18,000 more than the goal of $252,000, bringing in a record high of $270,258.
In 2007, $226,000 was raised and in 2006, $156,000.
Foley said although the 2008 goal was surpassed, the Cumberland County YMCA must continue fund raising because they provide more than $600,000 in financial assistance to individuals and families who might otherwise not afford access to programs.
“It is our mission to ‘build strong kids, individuals, families and communities through programs and services that promote a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, regardless of ability to pay’,” she said. “The Cumberland County YMCA is striving to be more program-focused, rather than just user-focused. Not just keeping the doors open to everyone, which we do, but making sure that when they do come to our facilities, there are activities into which they can quickly and comfortably be included.”
Ongoing fund raising initiatives will include grant submissions, sponsorship acquisition, upcoming branch events and a Cumberland County YMCA signature event currently being planned for 2009. Updates will be posted on the CCYMCA web site.
